Gluten free Bread Reviews: Breads from Anna

breadsmona2I have been hearing about Manna from Anna (now Breads from Anna [1]) for years. But it wasn’t until I actually found them in the gluten-free section at Draegers [2] that I finally decided to splurge and take one of the mixes home. I picked the Gluten, Soy, Nut and Rice Free package. Some weeks later, I finally got around to trying it in the bread maker. The loaf rose into a beautiful loaf that easily competed with the best of the dairy breads I’ve made. I usually resist slicing into bread until it has cooled, as the bread retains its height the best that way, but this bread looked so amazing I couldn’t resist cutting off one piece of the heel and the next slice, slathering it in margarine and sharing it with the DH. The bread was soft, light, and fluffy, with a brown color and a wonderful, whole grain flavor. The DH also enjoyed it and gobbled it up right along with me. Over the next few days we had the bread soft and untoasted, and then toasted as it started to dry out. It made amazing brown, whole-grain type toast- and wonderful sandwiches. Of all the bread mixes I’ve tried, including Bob’s Red Mill, Pamela’s, and the Gluten-Free Sandwich Bread, this loaf from Breads from Anna is one of the best I’ve had. It may even be as good or better than Bette Hagman’s gluten-free bread recipes… but I’d have to try them in an official taste test to be sure. breadsmona3breadsmonaThe point is, this is awesome gluten-free bread, and if you’ve been holding out like I was, you should stop right now and order some direct from the company or have your local health food store order some for you. Unfortunately Amazon doesn’t seem to carry it right now, so that isn’t an option, but hopefully they will carry it again in the future. I’ve only tried the one mix- so if you have experience with their other mixes, whether it be one of the bread mixes (in various allergen-free variations or even an herb or yeast-free version), a muffin mix, pie crust mix, or pancake mix, please tell us about it in the comments. These mixes contain bean flours, so if you don’t tolerate bean flours they may not be the best choice for you- but if your allergens include dairy, soy, corn, nuts and even RICE, these mixes may be the best thing to happen to you in a while. And, even if you CAN have those things, like me- you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.
