Public Service Announcement: September 13 is National Celiac Awareness Day

I just learned that today, September 13, 2007, is “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day,” thanks to a passed resolution proposed by Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson and Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe. Cool, huh? So today would be a great day to urge family and friends to get those pesky antibody tests done, and possibly a handy gene test for the genes implicated in Celiac Sprue. Undiagnosed Celiac Disease can lead to all kinds of serious health problems in the future caused by malnutrition and malabsorption, not to mention increased risks for Cancer.Today’s the day to educate family and friends about Celiac- good luck and good health to you and your friends and family.

Here’s a copy of the resolution

  1. Thanks for the heads-up! Indeed, this may be an excellent time to convince relatives to get their tests done. Cindy and I are still working on the ‘celiac disease is not a psychosomatic illness’ debate. Perhaps this would be another good opportunity to remind them that the disease is not only real, it’s genetic, and as you say, they should get tested.

Looking forward to your recipe box :)

  2. I wish I had known about that resolution ahead of time – I would have written a letter of support!

Something to put on the calendar for next year… ;-)
